Exhibition Wach und Leise in Mainz, Germany, 2025
The solo exhibition Wach und Leise at Mainz Gallery is a project that focuses on archiving linear elements found within natural materials.
The term "Gyeol" (결) in Korean refers to the texture or grain formed by the arrangement of hard and soft parts in materials such as wood, stone, or skin.
This project seeks to identify and reinterpret such linear structures within nature.
Drawings that deconstruct and recompose natural elements into lines are arranged within the space in new relational configurations.
One composition—featuring an image that merges waves and grass—faces another consisting of smoke rendered as two hanging scrolls, combined with the image of a flame.
In this exhibition, the stone functions as a conclusive or collective entity that embodies all linear elements.
Dispersed throughout the space, it performs a physical role—pressing down or pulling downward.
Each stone is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, and within the vitrines, they are arranged side by side in various replicated forms, revealing a diversity of material qualities.
These elements and objects, 'collected' by the artist from nature, are re-presented through acts of 'preservation,' 'decoration,' and 'exhibition,' creating a new order distinct from their original context in the natural environment.
