This project begins by treating the cuts, abrasions, and impact marks on locally gathered pebble stones as physical records—material inscriptions produced through prolonged contact with daily movement. Wheels, shoes, and repetitive frictions function as writing instruments, inscribing the micro-history of a place directly onto the stone surface. Each mark corresponds to an accumulated gesture: rubbing, sliding, striking, or simply bearing weight over time.
By tracing these surfaces in pencil, the project translates the stone’s material memory into a legible form. The resulting drawings operate as a secondary archive—an extracted and re-presented record that foregrounds the stone’s role as an involuntary historian of the site. Rather than documenting events through narrative, the work presents history as a slow mechanical process, written through pressure and duration.
Developed as a site-specific archival practice, the project currently comprises two regional studies: one conducted in Mainz and another during a residency in Kalbe. Each location produces a distinct set of stones, each with its own pattern of accumulated marks, offering a comparative reading of local rhythms, infrastructures, and modes of movement. In this regard, the project proposes that the stone itself is a material chronicle, and that tracing its surface is a method of returning this tacit history to visibility.
